Golden Globes 2023: The Banshees of Inisherin wins Best Picture – Musical or Comedy

The Banshees of Inisherin has won the 2023 Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The film, directed by Martin McDonagh, was competing in the category against Babylon, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery andTriangle of Sadness.

At the start of the evening, Everything Everywhere All at Once had been the bookmakers’ favourite to take home the award, with The Banshees of Inisherin another hotly tipped contender.

The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two former friends who abruptly fall out.

McDonagh also took home the prize for best screenplay.

The Independent is also live-blogging the Golden Globes ceremony and its aftermath here.

This year’s ceremony is the first to be televised in two years, following a high-profile scandal surrounding the Globes’ organsing body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

Many high-profile celebrities have boycotted the Globes for the past two years, after an LA Times exposé called out a lack of diversity among the HFPA’s voting membership. (At the time, it did not have a single Black member among its ranks.)

On top of the diversity scandal, the organisation also faced criticism over “ethical lapses” in its business conduct.

In response, the HFPA expanded its membership and enforced a new code of conduct. This year’s ceremony went ahead as usual, with a star-studded live ceremony that was broadcast live on NBC in the US and later shown on Peacock in the UK.

The night was hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Stars including Austin Butler, Colin Farrell and Jamie Lee Curtis attended the event, competing for some of the top awards.

Not every celebrity has given up the HFPA boycott, however. Brendan Fraser revealed in advance that he would not be attending the ceremony, despite being nominated for a Best Actor award for his performance in The Whale. Fraser has long alleged that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the former president of the HFPA. Berk has denied the claim.
