Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway has said she's feeling "physically low" as she continues to deal with her husband Derek Draper's difficult recovery from coronavirus (COVID-19).

Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on today's (January 21) Good Morning Britain, Kate shared the heart-breaking news of a friend's loss, and also told viewers that Derek remains "ravaged by the effects of COVID".

"It's been a strange time," Kate said. "I've been a bit low since Christmas, physically low. I've felt like I'm slightly physically at the end of my tether. I've had to re-group a bit."

The presenter – who recently announced that she's writing a book about her husband's illness – went on to say that a friend's mother-in-law had sadly passed away from coronavirus at just 51 years old.

"She got it at Christmas and she just went down very quickly and died," she said, visibly emotional.

"I cannot believe that here we are, so far on, Derek still ravaged by the effects of COVID [from] way back in March," she continued, adding that his recovery is still "incredibly uncertain".

Kate said that she is trying her best to stay hopeful about her husband's condition and is constantly "talking to doctors about what we can do for him".

The GMB favourite also reflected on the ongoing situation across the country, as the UK remains in a nationwide lockdown. "People are still dying in extraordinary numbers – people that aren't older and haven't got underlying conditions. It's unbearable."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
