Glen Powell works hard to maintain his ultra-fit physique — but he’s also careful not to push himself too hard.

The Top Gun: Maverick actor, 35, opened up to Men’s Health for their December cover story about the rules he has for himself when it comes to his diet and workout regimen, and he revealed some of the tips and tricks he’s accumulated from other stars over the years.

Working out is a necessary part of the day for Powell, who said he’s “better when I move.”

“If I don’t wake up and do something, for the rest of the day I feel like I’m playing catch-up,” he told the outlet.

He likes to “switch up” what kind of exercise he does on a given day, though, and lately, that has started to include some new sources of sweat.

“Recently I’ve gotten into pilates and yoga — not because I love it but because it’s a great little social scene, and then also you end up working muscles you’ve never worked before,” Powell shared before calling pilates “awful” but “great.”

He even revealed one particularly fascinating change to his body that’s resulted from his new workout routine.

“I tried Pilates and there’s a dimple in my ass that I have never seen before, and it is great. Real crowd-pleaser that dimple.”

In general, Powell said he focuses on things that he actually enjoys doing when it comes to his exercise routine. "I just do what makes me happy. I don’t put myself through torture anymore, I just do what I love," he said.

He’s also adopted a few new habits along the way that he’s learned from some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The best trick, he said, is to avoid beer and instead go for tequila.

“Beer during a movie shoot – not good for the camera,” he said before pointing out that beer “shows up” in his face. “It’s IMAX, the audience knows.”

Another tip he’s taken to mind came from none other than Sylvester Stallone, who Powell said once saw him doing crunches and told him to instead focus on the “cinema muscles” — forearms and traps, or the trapezius muscles in the upper back and neck.

Diet wise, Powell said he is “pretty chill” — and that’s a decision made out of a desire to avoid his mood going sour.

“I come from a family of eaters, so if you made me, like, truly diet, I think I’d be pretty grumpy. You don’t want to be around grumpy Glen. It’s not good.”

He’s also careful not to become too obsessive about what he is or isn’t eating, because then “all you do is think about food.”

“Make something that’s very manageable and easy,” he advised. “Because otherwise you become a weird, obsessed person about food and you never wanna be that guy. Everybody hates that guy.”

Powell added, “That’s why I don’t ever feel like I’m actually dieting, I eat what I love.”

Powell, who will return to the screen in December as he leads a new rom-com, Anyone But You, alongside Sydney Sweeney, made sure to mention to the outlet, though, that balance is as key to his physical health as it is to his mental health as he shared how he takes care of his mind.

“I think just keeping a little bit of real estate every day for you,” he said. “I think the one thing that I’ve realized, is you don’t have to make everybody happy, as long as you’re making yourself happy. And the people that love you, the people that are closest to you, the people that care about you—make them happy.”
