Glen Powell and Matthew McConaughey

Glen Powell went from being a fan of Matthew McConaughey to counting him as a trusted friend.

Speaking with PEOPLE about his Prime Video documentary The Blue Angels, the Austin native, 35, opens up about the parallels people have drawn between him and the fellow Texan, 54.

While Powell and McConaughey have had similar career trajectories — including their pipeline from romantic comedies to action films and producing — the Top Gun: Maverick actor jokes the common thread is their love of Texas Longhorns football.

“We're both die-hard Longhorn fans,” the Hit Man actor explains. “Being from Austin, Texas, and growing up a Texas Longhorn fan, to be on the sidelines with him, especially when Texas is the most exciting team in college football, that's been pretty fun and surreal.”

When they’re not cheering for their home state, Powell adds that McConaughey has also become a great mentor and friend to him as he adjusts to the spotlight. In fact, Powell recently revealed that McConaughey convinced him to leave Hollywood and move back home to Texas.

“Career-wise, things can be disorienting if you let them, and Matthew's been such a great friend and source of wisdom for me,” Powell says.

“He's a guy I've looked up to my whole life, so to have Matthew as a guy I can call if I'm ever feeling disoriented or confused about anything that's happening in my life, he's already been on that ride.”

From starring in blockbuster films to being inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame, Powell notes that this moment in his career has felt like a dream come true.

Notably, he references how some of his childhood heroes, like Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater, who were by him for his Hall of Fame ceremony, have now turned into his mentors.

Robert gave me my first job [in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over] and I've looked up to Richard Linklater my whole life, was just dying to just even say a line in something he was in,” Powell explains.

“Now that [Linklater and I are] friends and collaborators, he's been the most defining collaborator I've ever had in my whole life, and one that I feel like we're just getting started."

“It's been surreal,” he adds, noting how his Hall of Fame ceremony was even more special with his parents by his side.

"[It] really put it into perspective to have your family next to you who remember all the auditions that you didn't get, all the heartache, and a lot of those really tough years," Powell explains. "All the failure along the way makes the wins feel a lot brighter."
