Girls in Nepal are being worshipped as goddesses

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal

It’s a tradition that’s believed to ward off bad luck and disease

The girls who participate are usually younger than seven

They are seen as earthly incarnations of divine feminine energy

and manifestations of the goddess ‘Taleju’

(SOUNDBITE) (Nepali) KATHMANDU RESIDENT, RAJAN MAHARAJAN, SAYING:

"We always pray to the goddesses and gods for the wellbeing of children and their health. This tradition of worshipping the girls undergoes three forms- Hinduism, Buddhism, and Tantrism. We believe that after undergoing this ritual, none of the girls participating in it would have any health problems in future."
