Giraffes get frozen treats in heatwave

Giraffes Casper and Floppy, who arrived in Skopje three years ago, were licking frozen ice blocks filled with onions, leeks, apples, carrots and courgettes, all freshly prepared in the zoo kitchen.

Zookeeper Aleksandra Spasovska said that although giraffes - from Africa - can endure a lot of heat, caretakers were looking for a way to cool them down.

The temperature is forecast to drop to about 31 degrees (88F) over the weekend but will rise up again at the beginning of next week.
