SINGAPORE —Stallholders at next year's Geylang Serai Ramadan bazaar will benefit from a rental cap set at $15,000, as announced by Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, on Sunday (29 October).

In a post on his Facebook page, Associate Professor Faishal - who is the lead adviser for Wisma Geylang Serai, part of the People's Association (PA) responsible for organising the annual Ramadan bazaar - emphasised the initiative's goal of making the event "more affordable" for sellers and consumers.

"We hear you," he wrote in the post.

"I am happy to announce that we are going to implement a maximum rental cap of $15,000 per booth for Bazaar Raya Geylang Serai 2024. This will benefit consumers by offering items which are more cost-effective."

Complaints of high rental costs

This year's bazaar, which ran from 17 March to 21 April, featured over 700 stalls and was jointly-organised by S-Lite Event Support, TLK Trade Fair and Events, and Enniche Global Trading.

Earlier in March, The Straits Times reported complaints from bazaar stallholders about the high rental costs they had to bear, which didn't cover the incidental expenses and additional premiums for selling specific food items.

For the 2023 bazaar, base rentals ranged from $2,000 to $19,000, with an extra $4,000 premium for those selling Ramly burgers, according to ST. Stallholders selling kebabs were charged a base rental of $25,000.

All food-and-beverage stallholders also incurred incidental costs ranging from $30 to $3,100, covering utilities, water supply, fans, coolers, tables and chairs.
