Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has been dealt a massive blow as Boubacar Kamara has been sidelined with a long-term injury.

The French midfielder made his move over from Marseille this summer and had adapted well to life in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old has started in all seven of Aston Villa’s Premier League matches this season, but he was forced off with an injury against Southampton.

Gerrard admitted after the match he was worried about the scale of the injury and his worst fears have come true.

According to L’Equipe, Kamara will be out of action for two months and likely won’t feature for Aston Villa again until after the World Cup.

Kamara will likely miss Villa’s next eight Premier League fixtures, which include games against the likes of Chelsea and Man United.

In a largely inconsistent season for Villa, Kamara had been one of their more reliable players.

He would usually sit at the base of the midfield and break up play.

The Frenchman does an excellent job of breaking up play and has made 23 tackles so far this season, which is more than any other Aston Villa player.

Considering Villa snatched him up on a free transfer, Kamara had represented excellent value for money up until this point.

Gerrard will now have to go back to the drawing board to configure his side without Kamara in the middle.

Douglas Luiz would be the obvious player to step into the role, although there have been doubts over his future.

Before the international break, Villa managed to secure a point against Man City and a win against Southampton to relieve the pressure on Gerrard.

His side enjoyed another summer of spending as they splashed out several big players.

They haven’t had much luck when it comes to injuries this season though. Their marquee summer signing, Diego Carlos has been ruled out with a potential season-ending injury after just two matches.

With the money that had been invested into this Villa side, the pressure will continue to mount on Gerrard if he isn’t able to deliver an improvement on last season’s 14th placed finish.

Villa currently sit 15th in the table on seven points after seven matches.

Next up for Villa is a trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United, before they then play Nottingham Forest and Chelsea.
