Geri Halliwell has been criticised online for celebrating England's Euro 2022 win with MP Nadine Dorries.

The former Spice Girl was sat next to Dorries at Wembley Stadium as they watched England beat Germany 2-1 after extra time.

Dorries then posted a picture of the two celebrating on Twitter along with the caption “Girl power radiating from Wembley tonight."

Many Spice Girls fans were critical of Halliwell of embracing Dorries, the Conservative MP who has outspoken views on trans rights, abortion and Islam.

But the pop star has been an outspoken supporter of the Conservative Party and previously picked out Margaret Thatcher as an icon of girl power.

Halliwell paid tribute to Thatcher when she died in 2013, saying: “Thinking of our 1st Lady of girl power, Margaret Thatcher, a green grocer’s daughter who taught me any thing is possible…x.”

She also once proclaimed that the Spice Girls were 'true Thatcherite'": "We Spice Girls are true Thatcherites.

"She was the first Spice Girl, the pioneer of our ideology — Girl Power. But we're also desperately worried about the slide to a single currency… [Blair's] just not a pair of safe hands for the economy."

One user wrote on social media about Halliwell: "It seems like the relative morality of geri hugging nadine dorries is todays hot button topic and I’m here for all the hot takes.

"She always was a Tory though so I don’t know why anyone is surprised. You should lower your expectations of pop stars!"

Another commented on the photo with a joke, saying: "Hoping this was taken midway through Geri doing a wrestling move."

Halliwell has yet to comment on the photo posted by Dorries.
