‘Genius: Aretha’ Director, Executive Producer Anthony Hemingway Signs With M88 (EXCLUSIVE)

Emmy-winning director and producer Anthony Hemingway has signed with M88.

Best known for “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” “Red Tails” and “Underground,” Hemingway most recently directed and executive produced “Genius: Aretha,” starring Cynthia Erivo, who earned an Emmy nomination for lead actress in a limited series for her performance as Aretha Franklin. The director also recently helmed the premiere episode of Starz’s “Power” spinoff, “Power Book II: Ghost,” starring Mary J. Blige.

Up next, Hemingway will helm the college football drama film, “Work Horses,” for Amazon Studios, developed alongside Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Hemingway is also set to produce the upcoming animated short, “Skin Deep,” with 6 Point Harness, the animated studio behind Matthew Cherry’s Oscar winner “Hair Love.” Hemingway is also set to pair with “Pose” star Hailie Sahar for a Sir Lady Java biopic, bringing the one-time performer and long-time LGBTQ activist’s story to the big screen.

Hemingway launched his eponymous production banner Anthony Hemingway Productions in 2018, with the mission to “revolutionize and add dimension to the human story, be the ears for the unheard, a microphone for the voiceless and a lens for the unseen, while liberating others to do the same in their own lives” through storytelling and creating content. In 2020, Hemingway inked an overall deal with 20th Century Television, where he will develop and direct new projects his production company.

The filmmaker made his directorial debut on “The Wire” in 2006, and has since directed episodes of both network and cable television, including “Battlestar Galactica,” “Power,” “Empire,” “ER,” “The Newsroom,” “Orange Is the New Black,” “American Horror Story,” “Shameless,” “All Rise,” as well as his feature debut, “Red Tails.” Hemingway also served as the director and executive producer of WGN’s “Underground.”

In 2016, Hemingway won his first Emmy award as a co-executive producer of “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” which won the outstanding limited series prize. The filmmaker was also nominated for directing the hit FX series’ penultimate episode “Manna From Heaven.” (He directed five of the series’ 10 episodes.) Hemingway also collected a Golden Globe, BAFTA TV award, PGA’s David L. Wolper honor and a NAACP Image Award.
