Summary:

Created in 1974, the constituency was first represented by Bruce Douglas-Mann as a Labour MP.

But he defected to the Social Democratic Party in 1982, triggered a by-election to win a new mandate, but lost to Tory Angela Rumbold.

She held the seat until 1997.

It was then won by Labour’s Siobhain McDonagh, now a Dame.

She has a sizeable majority, of 16,482 at the 2019 election.

Area: Wards in the constituency include Cannon Hill, Colliers Wood, Cricket Green, Figge’s Marsh, Graveney, Lavender Fields, Longthornton, Lower Morden, Pollards Hill, Ravensbury and St Helier.

Boundary changes impact (Thrasher and Rallings analysis): Boundary changes have made this marginally a less safe Labour seat. The party won it in 2019 with 61.1 per cent of the vote, with the Tories on 25.1 per cent, and Lib Dems 8.1 per cent. Under the new boundaries it would have been 57.5 per cent Labour, 26.7 per cent Conservative and 10.8 per cent Lib Dem.
