Millions of voters across London will go to the polls on July 4 to elect the new Government. The Standard looks at key battleground and other seats in the capital, and has published an interactive map. Here we turn the spotlight on:

HORNCHURCH AND UPMINSTER

Estimated declaration time 4am

Candidates for main parties (in alphabetical order):

Sunny Brar - Labour Party

Melanie Collins - Green Party

David Warren Durant - Independent

Julia Lopez - Conservatives

Nicholas Palmer - Reform UK

Ian Sanderson - Liberal Democrats

Summary:

This seat is so far east in London that it stretches across the M25, and includes the village of Noak Hill in rolling farmland. It has a high level of home ownership, with the average house price in 2023 being just over £490,000.

The constituency was one of a handful in the capital where Nigel Farage’s UKIP came second at the 2015 election, so the Tory vote could be under threat from his latest party, Reform UK.

But Ms Lopez, who is minister of state for tourism, media and creative industries, won it at the 2019 Brexit election with a hefty majority of 23,308.

Area: Wards in the constituency include Cranham, Emerson Park (part of), Gooshays, Hacton (part of), Harold Wood, Heaton, St. Andrew’s (part of), and Upminster

Boundary changes impact (Thrasher and Rawlings analysis): Boundary changes have not significantly changed the political make-up of this constituency.

YouGov MRP poll prediction: Tory hold - one of the six seats in the capital which YouGov’s latest survey says will remain Conservative.

Evening Standard view: This is the safest Tory seat in London, according to the 2019 election results, so don’t expect any change in this far eastern corner of the capital.
