SIMPANG RENGGAM, Nov 13 — Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Simpang Renggam parliamentary candidate Maszlee Malik and his entourage was chased away by an elderly man while campaigning in the constituency earlier here today.

A video, lasting a minute and 29 seconds, captured a scene where the Simpang Renggam incumbent was chased out by an enraged elderly man shortly after arriving at a community hall in Kampung Isnin Maarof in the Simpang Renggam area.

In the video, the elderly man shouted at Maszlee when he reached the main gates of the hall.

The elderly man started shouting at the PH candidate in a harsh tone, telling him to immediately vacate the premises.

Two policemen were seen controlling the situation and managed to calm the elderly man before he was escorted away from Maszlee.

However, another elderly man who had earlier also blocked Maszlee from entering the premises to campaign again asked him to leave.

The other elderly man was heard saying: "We follow the law. We told you last night that politicians are not allowed to come (campaign in the building).”

Maszlee then retorted back and told him that a lot had been done by him in Simpang Renggam.

The former Education Minister said that he has been serving in the constituency for close to five years and is among those who have solved the water as well as garbage waste issues.

In addition to that, Maszlee also said he was instrumental in bringing in a McDonald's fast food outlet in the area.

Despite that, the elderly man did not want to listen to Maszlee’s explanation and told him to leave, before the latter claimed that the treatment given to him was typical of "Umno behaviour.”

The incident is believed to have been recorded by the PH campaign machinery staff before it was uploaded on social media.

In the previous 14th general election (GE14), the Simpang Renggam federal constituency was won by Maszlee with 18,157 votes, compared to Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Lian Teck Meng who received 14,682 votes, while PAS’ Mohd Jubri Selamat trailed with 2,983 votes.

Maszlee, who was then representing PH from his previous Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) won with a majority of 3,475 votes.

For GE15, Maszlee will lock horns with BN candidate, former Johor mentri besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad, Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Mohd Fazrul Kamat and Gabungan Tanah Air’s Kamal Kusmin in a four corner contest.
