Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the inevitable news that Lucas Moura will be leaving the club on a free transfer this summer.

Lucas will reach the end of his contract once the current campaign concludes. It has long been thought that there will be no renewal for the winger, who has failed to start any of his 13 Premier League appearances this season and has recently been helping out Tottenham’s under-21 team.

Now, a club statement from Spurs has confirmed that 2022-23 will be Moura’s final season with the club, after 219 appearances and 38 goals in their colours – which is described as ‘tremendous service’.

Speaking via a video on Tottenham’s Twitter account, Lucas said: “My Spurs, wherever I am, my heart will always be here. You are my club.

“It has been the greatest honour to defend this badge. Every flick, every tackle, every leap, every goal.

“From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, from the beginning to the end, you sung my name. This has been my honour, this has been my dream. This will always be my home.

“Some nights we will never forget, written in history together. I will always love you no matter where I go. We will meet again. Come on you Spurs!”

Lucas Moura ready for next chapter after Tottenham exit

Tottenham brought Moura to the Premier League in January 2018 when they signed him from Paris Saint-Germain. Prior to his entry into European football with the French giants, he had come through the ranks at Sao Paulo in his native Brazil.

Moura’s most memorable contribution in a Tottenham shirt was the hat-trick he scored against Ajax in 2019 to send the club into the Champions League final.

His importance to the side diminished during the Antonio Conte era, though. Whoever takes charge as Tottenham’s next head coach this summer will not get the chance to work with Lucas.

Instead, the 30-year-old can start thinking about where he will go next. Rumours have suggested he could leave the Premier League behind altogether.

His next destination will become clearer in time, as will who might follow him out of the exit door at Tottenham.

The club’s announcement has promised a further update on which players they are releasing and retaining, but only after the Premier League season ends.

Tottenham, who are currently seventh in the table, still have games against Brentford and Leeds United on the schedule. Whether or not acting head coach Ryan Mason gives Moura the chance to make a farewell cameo in either game remains to be seen.

After that, Spurs will have to make decisions about Clement Lenglet, Arnaut Danjuma and Dejan Kulusevski after their loan spells at the club. Elsewhere, some players who are tied to longer-term contracts may be facing the axe.
