Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has been spotted filming on the Cornish coast with an array of medieval weapons and armour hinting at a violent plot.

The long-awaited spin-off series is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and eager fans will be excited to see there is plenty of weaponry on hand for the new show, suggesting it will be every bit as grisly as the original.

Armoury and costumes were spotted perched on top of the cliffs in picturesque Kynance Cove, where pictures show a tented area surrounded by wooden weapons and tables, with spears and swords poking out in the background.

Huge longbows were seen scattered around the set in preparation for the HBO series that Game of Thrones fans are hoping will fill the hole left in their viewing schedules by the show's end in 2019.

Crates, barrels and shields were also seen at the popular beauty spot ahead of filming for the prequel, which centres on the dragon-riding Targaryen family.

Onlooker Richard Cooper, 33, said: "I'm a fan of the show and looking forward to it.

"I was lucky enough to be able to walk right through the set although I suspect it’ll be closed off to the public very soon.

"But it was amazing to see the props up close, the detail that goes into these kinds of things is insane! They've set up in a beautiful spot so it'll make for stunning TV."

Although the series being set hundreds of years before Game of Thrones obviously rules out a cast return, House of the Dragon has signed up some exciting names.

The Crown's Matt Smith, 38, plays Prince Daemon Targaryen with non-binary actor Emma D’Arcy, 28, starring as his niece Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.

However, with scenes looking set to be every bit as violent as Game of Thrones, it would be no surprise if the prequel followed suit by continuing to wield the axe at characters throughout.

The prequel to the popular HBO series started filming in April this year and is set to hit screens in 2022.
