Funeral of Pope Benedict Begins in St Peter's Square

The funeral service of former Pope Benedict XVI got underway in St Peter’s Square in the Vatican on Thursday morning, January 5, attended by thousands of mourners.

Footage by Elise Ann Allen, a senior correspondent with Crux, shows the pope’s coffin being carried into St Peter’s Square, and a reading by an Irish woman, given the honor in recognition of her parish work, Irish media said.

Pope Benedict’s funeral began at 8:30 am local time. Pope Francis was scheduled to preside over the Mass.
