‘Frozen II’ Skyrockets to $140 Million-Plus Weekend in Early Thanksgiving Box Office Estimates

Disney’s “Frozen II” is already showing signs that it could blow by even the wildest expectations this Thanksgiving weekend, possibly setting a new five-day total record for the holiday period.

According to early industry estimates, “Frozen II” is now projected to earn more than $140 million from Wednesday to Sunday. On Monday, analysts who spoke to TheWrap projected a strong $80 million extended weekend for the sequel. But after the film earned $12.8 million on Monday and $20.7 million on Tuesday — November records for both those weekdays — projections began rapidly climbing.

Of course, all this comes with the caveat that this is a long weekend and numbers can fluctuate over the next few days. But even if “Frozen II” finished with a $115 million five-day total, that would still set a new record for any film in theaters during Thanksgiving weekend. The all-time Thanksgiving record goes to “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” which was in its second weekend in theaters during Thanksgiving 2013 and grossed $109.9 million over five days.

Of course, the other big film in theaters that weekend six years ago was the original “Frozen,” which earned a five-day opening of $93.5 million. “Frozen II” is now expected to blast by that and could have a 1o-day domestic total of over $300 million and more than double the total that the original “Frozen” had after two weekends.

Meanwhile, the weekend’s two new releases, Lionsgate’s “Knives Out” and Universal/Makeready’s “Queen & Slim,” are also seeing their weekend estimates trend upward. “Knives Out,” which was projected for a $30 million opening against a $40 million budget, is now looking at a $38-40 million five-day start from 3,391 screens. “Queen & Slim” is now estimated for a $15 million extended opening from 1,625 screens against a $20 million budget.
