'Frozen' Austrian village awaits tourists' return

This Austrian village is 'frozen'

but not in terms of its temperature

Everything has ground to a halt here

In a normal year 1 million tourists

would come to visit Halstatt: population 780

(SOUNDBITE) (German) RESTAURANT OWNER MARKUS PAUL DERBL, SAYING:

"We rely on foreign tourists for about 95 percent of our income. They mostly come from Asia, America and England and neighboring European countries. If the borders are closed it will be very difficult for us to keep any sort of business ticking over."

Many visitors come to see

the picture-perfect postcard village

made famous by a South Korean TV series

Austrian restaurants are set to reopen at the end of May

But borders remain essentially closed

leaving locals with an anxious wait

for life to return to normal
