Fresh charge, bail revoked for woman filmed without mask at MBS
SINGAPORE — A Singaporean woman facing multiple charges of failing to wear a mask in public was remanded on Saturday (24 July) after receiving a fresh charge for a similar offence.
Phoon Chiu Yoke, a 54-year-old former naval officer, was charged with one new count of failing to wear a mask while visiting the Mandarin Orchard hotel at around 3pm on 25 June this year, according to court documents.
Her bail was revoked as she had committed the alleged offence while on bail for her earlier charges. Phoon's bail was raised to $12,000 on 6 July after she was handed 14 fresh charges.
In total, she now faces 22 charges with her next pre-trial conference set for Monday.
Phoon first made headlines following a viral video that was circulated over social media, which showed her being confronted by a Safe Distancing Ambassador (SDA) for not wearing a mask while visiting the Marina Bay Sands mall on 15 May this year.
Subsequent investigations found that she had allegedly committed similar offences dating back to the middle of last year.
For each charge of contravening a COVID-19 control order, Phoon potentially faces up to six months' jail, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. If convicted of being a repeat offender, she could face twice the jail time or fine.
