French president Emmanuel Macron says he'll 'fight hard'“ ”to keep “Emily in Paris” location, Rome mayor tells him to 'take it easy'

In the last half of "Emily in Paris" season 4, Emily headed to Rome — a city she will continue to frequent in season 5.

Oh, mon dieu! European politicians are beefing over Emily in Paris.

French president Emmanuel Macron recently sat down for an extensive interview with Variety, where he praised the Netflix hit centered on the adventures of Lily Collins' titular American marketing executive in Paris. When asked about Emily's recent visit to Rome in the second half of season 4 and the upcoming season 5, Macron vowed to "fight hard" for her return to the City of Light.

"And we will ask them to remain in Paris!" Macron said. "Emily in Paris in Rome doesn‘t make sense."

The Mayor of Rome has since caught wind of Macron's proclamation. Roberto Gualtieri wrote to Macron on social media, "Don't worry: Emily is doing very well in Rome. And then you can't control your heart: let's let her choose."

It didn't end there. Gualtieri later hopped on the phone with The Hollywood Reporter Roma to offer more pointed comments. "Doesn’t President Macron have more pressing matters to worry about?” asked Gualtieri. “I would like to believe, at least I would like to hope, that Macron was joking, because he ought to know that a production company like Netflix does not take orders from heads of state or make decisions based on political pressure.”

He added, “There are perhaps a few more pressing issues for the French president. For example, there a couple of wars going on in Ukraine and in the Middle East, there is a horrible hurricane that hit America and which is linked to climate change, and a few other matters of state in Europe for Macron that are more important than Emily, I imagine.”

Gualtieri, for one, is glad that Emily will be extending her stay in Italy. "We see Emily’s move to Rome as a confirmation that our city is becoming more and more important, and we are quite relaxed about Netflix production decisions," said the mayor. "They know what they are doing. To be honest, we think Mr. Macron should just relax."

No word yet on whether any Italian first ladies or gentlemen will cameo in season 5. Macron's wife Brigitte notably cameoed in the current season 4, and the president told Variety he was a very proud husband. "She was very happy to do it," said Macron. "It’s just a few minutes, but I think it was a very good moment for her. I think it’s good for the image of France. Emily in Paris is super positive in terms of attractiveness for the country. For my own business, it’s a very good initiative."

As for whether series creator Darren Star has reached out to him about a future cameo, "I’m less attractive than Brigitte!" quipped the president.
