French Open 2023 LIVE: Scores and results after Novak Djokovic advances and Cameron Norrie exits

The French Open third round is underway but Cameron Norrie’s campaign ended in disappointing fashion with a straight-sets loss to Lorenzo Musetti in the third round.

It is the third year in a row the British number one has fallen in the last 32, and he only managed to mount any real challenge in the third set before going down 6-1 6-2 6-4.

Earlier, Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka continue to navigate off-court controversies at Roland Garros, while Carlos Alcaraz joined them in advancing to the last 16.

Djokovic beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina amid the fall-out of his decision to write “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia” on the camera after his first-round victory, as the Serbian continued his bid to win a men’s record 23rd grand slam. Djokovic remains on a collision course with world No 1 Alcaraz, who thrashed Denis Shapovalov in straight sets in the night session.

Sabalenka resumed her bid for consecutive grand slam titles with a straight-sets win against Kamilla Rakhimova. It came after she was confronted by a Ukrainian journalist following her second-round win and afterwards, Sabalenka did not undertake her usual media duties citing mental health concerns.

The result of the day was pulled off by Lorenzo Sonego, who came from two sets down to stun seventh seed Andrey Rublev in an epic comeback, before Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina recovered from a set down to defeat the Russian Anna Blinkova and continue her run at Roland Garros.

Here’s Djokovic: “I knew it was going to be a difficult match, a physical match. He competed very well, he’s an amazing fighter and an amazing player. There are not many weaknesses in his game and he played a great match.

“A win is a win. I thought if I lost the second set we would probably play five hours today. You have to be ready, that is what Grand Slam tennis is all about. It takes a lot of effort but you have to believe in yourself. I am proud of the performance today for sure.

“Three hours for two sets is obviously a lot. It required a lot of energy and my priority now is to recover. Tomorrow I will have a day off and I’ll be ready to play again.”

Aryna Sabalenka opts out of French Open media duties after tense exchange

17:39 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka did not undertake her usual media duties at the French Open citing mental health concerns after her third-round win over Kamilla Rakhimova.

The second seed was involved in a tense exchange with a Ukrainian journalist on Wednesday over her previous support for Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko.

“For many months now I have answered these questions at tournaments and been very clear in my feelings and my thoughts,” said Sabalenka.

“These questions do not bother me after my matches. I know that I have to provide answers to the media on things not related to my tennis or my matches but, on Wednesday, I did not feel safe in the press conference.

“I should be able to feel safe when I do interviews with the journalists after my matches. For my own mental health and well-being, I have decided to take myself out of this situation today, and the tournament has supported me in this decision.”

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-6 3-0 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

17:25 , Jamie Braidwood

The tide has turned here, and you can’t really blame Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard’s level drops slightly as Djokovic breaks to start the second set. Djokovic overcomes a slight wobble to hold and take a 3-0 lead in the third.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-6 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

17:11 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic calls a medical timeout! The 36-year-old is getting work down on his left thigh - the area he was banging earlier.

The Philippe-Chatrier starts to boo and Djokovic applauds sarcastically in response, asking for more.

It came as Davidovich Fokina went off court anyway - Djokovic looks fine to continue.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 7-6 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Set!

17:07 , Jamie Braidwood

That must be so gutting for Davidovich Fokina. In two hours and 48 minutes the Spaniard has taken Djokovic to two tiebreak but has nothing to show for it. He had a set point, too, before the tiebreak.

The match has been equal but Djokovic is just winning the most important points. The huge celebration from him there tells you how vital that set was. Massive.

Davidovich Fokina can’t believe it after Djokovic somehow salvages a point to edge ahead in the tiebreak. The Spaniard has put everything into this match and is doubling over after almost every point, but Djokovic is really turning on the steel now and gets to the change of ends leading 4-2.

16:55 , Jamie Braidwood

On we go.

Elena Svitolina 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 Anna Blinkova

What a win and what a comeback for Elena Svitolina! The Ukrainian advances to the fourth round after coming from behind to defeat the Russian player Anna Blinkova, sealed with a stunning backhand winner down the line.

There’s no handshake between the players at the net - as expected - but Svitolina is cheered by the crowd.

This is Svitolina’s first grand slam appearances since giving birth, and she’s back in the fourth round of a slam for the first time since 2020!

“I was coming here without any expectations... Coming back after giving birth is extremely complicated. I’m really motivated to go further in this tournament.”

Great scenes.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 5-5 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

16:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Do not for a second start to predict where this match is going to go. Serving for the second set, Djokovic is broken to love by Davidovich Fokina!

It’s back on serve and the Spaniard clenches his fist as he stays alive.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 5-4 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

16:34 , Jamie Braidwood

After two holds, Djokovic ramps up the pressure at 4-4 in the second set and squeezes out a couple of errors from Davidovich Fokina.

It brings up two break points and as the ball sits up for Djokovic mid-court, with Davidovich Fokina in at the net, the Serbian takes his chance.

He drills a backhand at Davidovich Fokina, and the volley into the net seals the break. Djokovic will serve for the set next - a chance Davidovich Fokina had in the opener.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 3-3 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

16:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Another break, another twist! This time it’s Davidovich Fokina who responds and finds some new life to break. Djokovic fired another double fault to help the Spaniard along the way. It’s now level again in the second.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 3-2 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

16:16 , Jamie Braidwood

Three games in a row for Djokovic and suddenly Davidovich Fokina is the player who is looking uncomfortable as he stretches something out on the baseline. Quite turnaround here in the second set.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 1-2 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

16:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Davidovich Fokina has broken Djokovic three times in this match. Each time, the Serbian has broken straight back. The Spaniard led 40-15 there, too.

Djokovic has been hitting his leg at times throughout this match - as if he’s trying to wake up his muscles.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 0-2 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

16:02 , Jamie Braidwood

From facing three break points in the opening game, Davidovich Fokina breaks Djokovic in the next game! Djokovic is certainly struggling a bit with his serve, and the Spaniard this time takes advantage. Interesting.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 0-1 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

15:54 , Jamie Braidwood

That first set took one hour and 23 minutes - which wasn’t even Djokovic’s longest first set of the tournament! The Serbian needed one hour and 27 minutes against Fucsovics in the previous round.

Djokovic went off court for a break but returns to set up two break points: Davidovich Fokina saves them both, and then a third too after going back to the drop shot.

A backhand winner down the line later and Davidovich Fokina takes an important opening hold. Djokovic was pushing hard there.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 7-6 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Set!

15:43 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic wins the set in style! A stunning crosscourt return winner from Djokovic seals the tiebreak 7-4 and will come as a huge blow to Davidovich Fokina - who served for the set at 6-5. Djokovic has been well below his best, but saves his shot of the match so far for the end.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 6-6 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

15:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic looked to be in a hole as Davidovich Fokina led 3-1 in the tiebreak, but Djokovic outlasts his opponent to win a couple of lengthy rallies at get to the change of ends at 3-3.

Djokovic is looking pretty uncomfortable out there.

15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

A couple of loose shots from Davidovich Fokina sees the Spaniard facing 15-40 on serve as Djokovic looks to save a tiebreak.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 5-6 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

French Open: Novak Djokovic 5-4 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina

15:13 , Jamie Braidwood

Djokovic looks to be in more control now on Philippe-Chatrier. Davidovich Fokina is still very competitive, lots of long rallies and longer games, but he will now need to serve to stay in the set - that’s a different pressure.

French Open: Game, set and match!

15:09 , Jamie Braidwood

Lorenzo Sonego 5-7 0-6 6-3 7-6 6-3 Andrey Rublev

Rublev pushes a backhand wide and suddenly Sonego has match point! A thrilling point - as Rublev comes into the net - but the seventh seed sends a volley wide as Sonego blasts his way through!

NO ONE saw this coming when Rublev won the second set 6-0. Rublev had the match in complete control - and had never lost a match from two sets up. Sonego had never won a match from two sets down, either.

That’s now changed - what a win for Sonego!

From two sets down, Lorenzo Sonego has come back and now leads the Russian in the fifth! Sonego breaks and will now serve for the match to complete the comeback!

French Open: Novak Djokovic 3-3 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

14:56 , Jamie Braidwood

Long rallies are certainly a theme here - as well as Davidovich Fokina drop shots. Djokovic races to meet one and gets his angles spot on to set up break point - but Davidovich Fokina saves with a forehand winner!

A backhand lob saves a second break point, but Djokovic keeps the pressure on. And finally, Davidovich Fokina buckles with a backhand into the net.

All square.

French Open: Novak Djokovic 2-3 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - Break!

14:46 , Jamie Braidwood

Davidovich Fokina has arrived! Djokovic takes a moment to cover his face with his towel after the Spaniard goes 15-30, and then two break points arrive as Djokovic pushes one long.

14:15 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka’s swift victory means Novak Djokovic is up next on Philippe-Chatrier against the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Djokovic admitted after his second-round win that he is fuelled by drama as the fall-out continued from his controversial message about Kosovo. The French sports minister weighed into the debate on Wednesday over Djokovic’s decision to write “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia” on the camera after his first-round victory at Roland Garros.

But Djokovic said: “I would say it again, but I don’t need to because you have my quotes if you want to reflect on that. Of course I’m aware that a lot of people would disagree, but it is what it is. It’s something that I stand for. So that’s all. Drama-free grand slam, I don’t think it can happen for me. I guess that drives me, as well.”

French Open: Russian teenager dreams of ‘winning 25 grand slam titles’

10:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Sixteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva said she dreams of winning 25 grand slam titles after reaching the third round of the French Open.

The prodigious Russian talent came through qualifying and has lost just six games in her first two main-draw matches, beating France’s Diane Parry 6-1 6-2 on Thursday. Andreeva only turned 16 at the end of April and is setting her sights sky high for her tennis career.

“The dream: I know that (Novak) Djokovic, he did 22 grand slams, so I want to go until 25, if it will be possible,” said the confident teenager.

Andreeva will try to keep her feet on the ground, though, adding: “As my coach says, to not be like a diva, to stay humble all the time. I don’t think that I have a lot of success now. I didn’t win any tournaments. I just play. It’s the third round of Roland Garros. I will play.”

Jannik Sinner wasted two match points as he was knocked out of the French Open 6-7(0) 7-6(7) 1-6 7-6(4) 7-5 in a second round thriller against German Daniel Altmaier on Thursday.

The red-haired Italian, who is often cheered on by six fans dressed as carrots - the Carota boys - and was spotted eating carrots as an on-court snack in Vienna, was not his dominant self as he bowed out after five hours 26 minutes.

Eighth-seeded Sinner, whose best performance at Roland Garros came in 2020 when he lost in the quarter-finals against Rafael Nadal, looked set for a no-nonsense win after cruising through the third set but Altmaier had other ideas.

French Open latest: Novak Djokovic driven by ‘drama’

10:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic admitted he is fuelled by drama as the fall-out continued from his controversial message about Kosovo.

The French sports minister weighed into the debate on Wednesday over Djokovic’s decision to write “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia” on the camera after his first-round victory at Roland Garros.

Speaking to TV station France 2, Amelie Oudea-Castera said the message amid violence in the north of the country, which is not recognised as independent by Serbia, was not appropriate and she warned Djokovic not to repeat the action.

He told Serbian media he would do it again but, after beating Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 7-6 (2) 6-0 6-3 in the second round, he opted just for a signature and smiley face.

At his post-match press conference, Djokovic said: “I would say it again, but I don’t need to because you have my quotes if you want to reflect on that.

“Of course I’m aware that a lot of people would disagree, but it is what it is. It’s something that I stand for. So that’s all. Drama-free grand slam, I don’t think it can happen for me. I guess that drives me, as well.”
