French Boats Enter St Helier Harbor Amid Fishing Dispute

French fishing vessels entered the port of St Helier, Jersey, on May 6, amid tensions over post-Brexit fishing arrangements.

Video shared by Instagram user @the_jersey_catch shows a number of boats travelling past the harbor wall towards the port.

Two Royal Navy ships were deployed to Jersey on the evening of May 5 “to conduct maritime security patrols”, the UK’s Ministry of Defence said.

Two French patrol vessels were also deployed nearby, according to the BBC.

The tensions have arisen as French fishermen say their rights have been unfairly restricted by a licence system introduced last week, which requires French boats to show they have a history of fishing in Jersey’s waters, the BBC said. Credit: @the_jersey_catch via Storyful
