This may be news to Sweet Magnolias fans, but Serenity doesn't start or end with Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue. Although the popular Netflix show focuses on the friendship between these three women, there's much more to Sherryl Woods' story about this sweet southern town. In fact, the first season of Netflix's Sweet Magnolias is loosely based off the first three books in Woods' series. "They pulled little threads from each of their stories and wove them into this first season and introduced things that happen over the course of the books," Woods told People. Some pivotal moments in the show, including the car accident in the season finale, were written specifically for TV.

Even though the second season doesn't follow the books at all, the series is still worth reading, especially if you want to understand the ways of sweet Serenity and the people who live there. Who knows, if Netflix brings back the show for a third season, we might see some of the other characters and storylines from the books.
