Former Tottenham man Victor Wanyama feels given the choice between Spurs and Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino “will choose” the former.

Tottenham have not had a particularly successful last few seasons. In the last three campaigns, they’ve finished sixth, seventh and fourth.

The fourth-placed finish was somewhat of a decent achievement, purely on the basis that the two years prior had been particularly poor. It was also Antonio Conte’s first season in charge, and he appeared capable of inspiring his side to bigger things.

Tottenham fans may have hoped he’d have brought them the type of success Pochettino had. In five full seasons at the helm, the Argentine’s side finished outside the top four just once – his first term.

Among those good seasons were two third-placed finishes and a second-placed finish, along with a spot in a Champions League final.

As such, living up to those seasons beyond Pochettino’s reign has been tough. Conte was unable to follow up his decent first season, and tensions at the club, which boiled over in a sensational rant on his own players, saw the Italian coach depart.

Tottenham are currently on the lookout for a new manager to take them forwards.

While Pochettino has been out of a job this season, London rivals Chelsea look the most likely to acquire his services, with many outlets reporting the terms of that deal are very close to being ironed out.

Wanyama feels Tottenham can hijack Pochettino move

However, some feel Tottenham have missed a trick in not attempting to lure their former boss back. Stan Collymore admitted he “can’t believe” they’ve not tried to do so.

Former Spurs man Wanyama is of the opinion Spurs would be in a better position than Chelsea if they tried to snap up Pochettino.

“I get it and I get how the fans feel and Pochettino should be the manager of Tottenham next season not Chelsea,” he told London World.

“I can understand the frustration within the fanbase because they know Pochettino gave every and I believe if there are two offers on the table between Chelsea and Tottenham, then the Pochettino I know will choose Tottenham.”

The vast majority of Wanyama’s career in north London saw him managed by Pochettino. As such, he should know the character of the boss.

With that being said, given he feels there’s potential the manager would consider returning to Tottenham, there might be a genuine chance of that happening.

Chelsea remain in the driver’s seat

While Wanyama feels Pochettino would return, that ship may have sailed. The Argentine has not yet been confirmed as Chelsea boss, but if reports are to be believed, it’ll only be a matter of time until that happens.

What’s more, the financial might the Blues have is surely far stronger than Spurs’.

Indeed, Tottenham might simply not be able to compete with their rivals. Surely the standard of the Chelsea squad – though currently underperforming – is an attractive asset for a manager, too.

The role at Stamford Bridge also has a lot of upside – the Blues are currently nowhere near the top-four race, so returning them to those heights would mean for accolades for the manager.

Tottenham seems a more challenging job. There’s not as much financial backing and if Harry Kane is to leave, the club would be lacking in genuine star talent.
