JOHOR BARU, Feb 24 – Former Johor menteri besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad will be vying for the Umno vice-president’s post in the upcoming party polls.

In his official Facebook, he said he submitted his nomination form at Umno’s headquarters in Menara Datuk Onn in Kuala Lumpur today.

“Alhamdulillah, being a blessed Friday, I have submitted my nomination form for the post of Umno vice-president in this election.

“May everything go smoothly and be made easy by Allah SWT...” said Hasni in a brief post today.

On February 4, Hasni, who is also an Umno supreme council member, announced that he would be in the running for Umno vice-president.

The 64-year-old Simpang Renggam MP added he will contest as a candidate for one of the three available posts.

Hasni is scheduled to lock horns with another former Johor menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who has also confirmed that he would be defending his vice-president’s post.

Earlier, Titiwangsa MP Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani also confirmed he would be in the running for the same post.

Umno has three vice-presidents, and they are Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Mohamed Khaled.

Umno is currently holding its internal party elections for all 191 divisions and 22,000 branches nationwide.

The party’s new office bearers will be elected from February 1 to March 18. However, the positions of president and deputy president will not be contested this time around.

In May last year, Umno amended its constitution to allow its party polls to be held within six months after the conclusion of the 15th general election (GE15).

The biggest Malay-based party had earlier postponed its party elections for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30, 2021.

Umno’s election for the 2021/2023 term was originally supposed to be held before December 30 last year prior to the postponement.
