Former Indiana Deputy Dies in Freak Lawnmower Accident: 'Profound Void'
“We stand together in support, honoring her legacy by carrying forward the values she held dear,” the Spencer County Sheriff's Office said of the late Amanda Klem
A former Indiana sheriff’s deputy died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, reportedly from an accident involving a lawnmower.
According to local TV affiliates WJTS and WEVV, Amanda Klem was on a lawnmower near a pond when it flipped, trapped her, and held her down underwater, resulting in her drowning.
The Spencer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Klem's death in a Facebook post on Thursday, Aug. 8, saying that her sudden passing has left a "profound void."
“Amanda served the Sheriff’s office with unwavering dedication and professionalism for nearly seven years, making a lasting impact on all who knew her,” the statement continued. “Her kindness, strength, and commitment to public service were evident every day, and she will be remembered for her compassionate spirit and the joy she brought to those around her.”

“We stand together in support, honoring her legacy by carrying forward the values she held dear,” the statement read.
“Rest in peace, Amanda,” the sheriff’s office concluded its post. “Your memory will forever be cherished, and your spirit will continue to inspire us.”
Per WJTS, Ted Klem, Amanda’s husband, serves as a corporal with the Huntingburg Police Department. In an Aug. 7 Facebook post, the department shared an illustration of a police badge that read "A. Klem EOW 8/7/24" (EOW stands for "end of watch").
Spencer County Sheriff Sherri Heichelbech told WEVV that Klem received a life-saving award during an emergency incident sometime in 2020. As for how the sheriff’s office will honor Klem and her family, Heichelbech said: “Everything is so fresh right now. But it wouldn’t surprise me that there isn’t some account that it’s made for her daughter Madison, for future education.”
PEOPLE contacted the Spencer County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, Aug. 9, for additional information, but did not receive an immediate response.
