Former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen to make IndyCar debut in place of Felix Rosenqvist
Kevin Magnussen will race an IndyCar for the first time this weekend.
Arrow McLaren announced Wednesday that the former Formula 1 driver would race in place of Felix Rosenqvist at Road America on Sunday. Rosenqvist is not cleared to race after a scary crash at Belle Isle on Saturday.
Rosenqvist's car went head-on into a tire barrier after the throttle stuck on his car on corner exit. The impact meant his car ended up pointing skyward and lodged in the tire barriers. The team said Rosenqvist didn't suffer any life or limb threatening injuries in the crash but he missed the second race of the Detroit doubleheader and will miss at least one more race because of the crash.
Olver Askew replaced Rosenqvist on Sunday at Detroit. But he's unavailable as a sub again because he's already subbing for someone else. Rinus VeeKay is out for Road America after he suffered a fractured clavicle in a cycling accident. Askew will take VeeKay's place in the No. 21 car for Ed Carpenter Racing.
Magnussen, 28, currently drives for Chip Ganassi Racing in the IMSA sports car series. He moved to IMSA after six seasons and 119 starts in Formula 1. Magnussen drove for McLaren in 2014 before spending the most recent five seasons at Haas.
Magnussen's presence at Road America means that both Haas drivers from 2020 are going to be in the IndyCar race. Magnussen's former Haas teammate Romain Grosjean will be driving the No. 51 car for Dale Coyne.
