Former Alabama Teacher of the Year and Son, 8, Dead in Car Crash That Injured 6 Others

A woman who was named Teacher of the Year at an Alabama school district and her 8-year-old son have died following a crash that reportedly left six others injured.

Brundidge police said the crash that killed 40-year-old Heather Minton and her son occurred on June 25 on County Road 4421, according to CBS affiliate WAKA and ABC affiliate WDHN.

Minton's family identified the second victim in a GoFundMe campaign as a child named Conners.

The child was airlifted from the scene, and later died at the hospital, WAKA reported.

Six other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. Brundidge Police Chief Sam Green said five injured individuals were inside the second vehicle, WDHN reported.

It is unclear how the fatal crash occurred. The Brundidge Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Heather was a science teacher at Pike County High School, according to CBS affiliate WTVY.

The Troy Messenger reported that she was among several educators to earn Teacher of the Year honors in 2023.

Pike County Public Schools did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

As of publication, more than $23,000 has been raised through the GoFundMe campaign in support of the Mintons.

According to the family who organized the online fundraiser, all of the money raised will go to Eric Minton as he navigates this new chapter in his life without Heather or Conners.

“I know that these wonderful people touched many lives, and I am praying that we can come together as a community for this family,” they said.

The Brundidge Methodist Church announced on Facebook that it has also started an account through Troy Bank and Trust where donors can “help out with expenses for the Minton Family.”

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, per the local news reports.
