One of New York's wettest days in decades left the metropolitan area stunned and swamped Friday after heavy rainfall knocked out several subway and commuter rail lines, stranded drivers on highways, flooded basements and shuttered a terminal at LaGuardia Airport for hours. Parts of Brooklyn saw more than 7.25 inches (18.41 centimeters), with at least one spot recording 2.5 inches (6 centimeters) in a single hour, according to weather and city officials.
Bad weather eased in central Greece on Friday leaving widespread flooding and infrastructure damage across the farming region that has been battered by two powerful storms in less than a month. In the storm-hit city of Volos, municipal workers were handing out bottled water as power and water outages remained in some districts for a third day, while rescue crews used excavators to clear debris-strewn roads blocking access to remote areas. The two storms, Daniel and Elias, struck central Greece and the island of Evia over three weeks in September, the first leaving 16 people dead, killing several hundred thousand farm animals and damaging highways, secondary roads and the rail network.
The Greek port city of Volos, still recovering from severe flooding from Storm Daniel early in September, was again hit by damaging storm conditions overnight into September 28, with local reports describing streets being turned into rivers.Footage here, provided by local Miltos Pap, showed street flooding in Volos on September 27.“We are safe, although the car was destroyed by the flood and we have been without water and electricity since yesterday afternoon,” Pap told Storyful on Thursday. The Greek Emergency Services issued traffic bans for several regions across the country, “due to the development of dangerous weather phenomena.”Storm Elias is the second bout of extreme weather Greece has faced in a matter of weeks, after Storm Daniel killed at least 16 people earlier in September. STORY: A packed memorial service for the victims of a deadly fire at an Iraqi wedding celebration took place on Thursday (September 28).At a funeral the day before, the groom was among the crowds of people weeping.Calls for accountability were growing in the Christian town of Hamdaniya, as grief-stricken mourners watched their loved ones being buried.More than 100 people died and at least 150 were injured on Tuesday evening in an inferno that government officials have said was enabled by a lack of safety and security measures and the use of highly flammable materials in the building. In a sermon interrupted at times by the wails of women clad in black, a priest at Al-Tahira Church told mourners that Iraq had been united in grief, but hecriticized officials for their corruption. It was a theme repeated by a victim's relative, Em Nour.“It is not okay for one person get burned because of a lack of safety measures, let alone tens of people. Iraqi blood is spilled so easily. There have been so many accidents over the years, like the boat that sunk in Mosul in 2019, the parks that lack safety measures. It is not about a certain area, it is the whole state that has no laws to protect the people."Criticism of a lax approach to public safety is common in Iraq. The state has been weakened by recurring conflict since the 2003 U.S. invasionServices are impaired by pervasive corruption for which few senior officials are ever held to account. The tragedy has revived memories of deadly fires that swept through two hospitals in Iraq in 2021, killing at least 174 people in all, that were at the time blamed on negligence, lax regulations and corruption.Government officials have announced the arrest of 14 people over Tuesday night's fire, including the owners of the events hall, and promised a swift investigation.

As the world still recovers from the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the threat of another pandemic, ominously named ‘Disease X’, looms on the horizon. Medical experts in the UK have issued a chilling warning, drawing parallels between Disease X and the devastating Spanish Flu that killed millions from 1918 to 1920. Their concerns are driven by the belief that Disease X could prove deadlier than the coronavirus and can likely cause up to 50 million deaths. For context, the COVID-19 pan
