FLYsiswa: RM300 flight ticket subsidy for university students now open for application. Here’s how to apply
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 ― As announced last month, the government is offering RM300 flight ticket subsidy to public university students in Malaysia. The subsidy is given as a credit shell and it is meant to be used for domestic flights for students to travel between their place of origin and the place of study. Public university students can now check their eligibility and they can use the flight subsidy to book flight tickets on Malaysia Airlines (including MASwings and Firefly), AirAsia, Batik Air and MYAirline.
MoT said the subsidy was introduced as a means to strengthen ties between Peninsular and Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan while helping to tackle the issue of cost of living. As mentioned by Transport Minister Anthony Loke last month, the initiative is estimated to cost RM16.8 million which will benefit over 56,000 public university students throughout Malaysia.
Are you eligible to redeem FLYsiswa RM300 flight subsidy?
If you’re a public student, you can check if you’re eligible to redeem on the Ministry of Transport’s Flight Subsidy portal. Just enter your MyKad (IC number) and select your public university. According to MoT, only students who are registered at a public university for the academic year 2022/2023 as of 30th June 2023 are eligible for the subsidy.
If the results show that you’re not eligible, public students can file can check and file an appeal to the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) through their respective universities.
How is the FLYsiswa RM300 flight subsidy issued?
Eligible students can proceed to apply for the RM300 voucher from their preferred airline. Each student can only pick one airline. After the application is successful, the airline will issue a digital voucher worth RM300 to the student in the form of a credit shell. This credit shell is not limited to just one flight booking. If the fare is less than RM300, the balance will be retained in the credit shell and can be used for the next flight ticket purchase.
What flights are eligible for FLYsiswa RM300 flight subsidy?
The subsidy is meant to aid students travelling between their place of origin and their place of study. The issued credit shell by the preferred airline can be used for both one-way and return tickets. According to the T&C, the RM300 subsidy can be used for the following scenario:
• Student from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan studying in Peninsular Malaysia
• Student from Peninsular Malaysia studying in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan
• Student from Sabah studying in Sarawak and Labuan
• Student from Sarawak studying in Sabah, Labuan
• Student from Labuan studying in Sabah and Sarawak
Is there an expiry date for the FLYsiswa RM300 flight subsidy?
The application for the FLYsiswa RM300 flight subsidy is available starting August 15, 2023 and the redemption must be done by December 31, 2023. While the redemption ends on December 31, 2023, eligible students can use the credit to purchase flights for trips after the expiry of the voucher.
