JOHOR BARU, Feb 6 — Favourable weather conditions in Johor have contributed to a decrease in flood victims placed at the various relief centres in the state.

The latest tally showed that only 420 flood evacuees from 119 families remain in five temporary relief centres (PPS) in Batu Pahat and Segamat as of 8am today.

Johor state secretary Tan Sri Azmi Rohani said the latest number of flood victims was a positive development, compared to the same period yesterday.

He said that yesterday’s records showed there were 670 victims involving 188 families housed in six PPS remaining.

“The flood situation improved following the closure of a PPS at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tenaga Setia in Batu Pahat at 4pm yesterday.

“The centre was housing 250 flood victims from Kampung Parit Baru and Kampung Parit Jayus,” he said in a statement today.

Azmi, also the Johor Disaster Management Committee chairman, said that Batu Pahat remained the district with the most flood victims.

He said a total of 394 victims from 110 families placed in four PPS was the latest recorded from the central Johor district.

“However, the situation in Segamat saw an improvement with only 26 victims from nine families remaining,” he said, adding that the district had only one operational PPS.

On road closure for motorists, Azmi said the Public Works Department (PWD) had only sealed off one road in the state.

He said the affected Jalan Sungai Tiram-Ulu Tebrau stretch in Kulai was still inaccessible to motorists due to the risks of landslides.

In a related development, Azmi said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage’s (DID) advisory cautioned that the water level reading of Sungai Bekok in Batu Pahat recorded 18.97m, which is above the danger level of 18.70m.

“The DID also issued an alert that the Sungai Segamat reading in Segamat Kecil is now at the warning level of 36.71m,” he said.
