Flight Radar Animation Shows Air Travel Over North America Amid FAA Outage

Normal air traffic operations gradually resumed across the United States on Wednesday, January 11, following an overnight system outage, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The FAA ordered all US airlines to delay domestic departures until 9 am Eastern Time on Wednesday morning as it worked to restore its Notice to Air Missions System, which alerts pilots to potential flight operations problems.

A flight radar animation shows a snapshot of air travel over the United States between 5 am and 10:30 am EST on January 11, amid the FAA delays, according to Flightradar24.

The flight tracking service reported about 700 fewer airborne flights at around 7:30 am EST on January 11 compared to the same time the prior week.

FlightAware listed more than 7,000 delays and more than 1,100 cancellations of US flights on January 11. Credit: Flightradar24 via Storyful
