Flag Flies at Half-Mast on Santos' Stadium Following Pele's Death

Pele’s former team Santos FC was flying its flag at half-mast on December 29 following the soccer legend’s death.

Footage posted to Instagram shows the flag lowered in tribute at Santos’ stadium.

Pele spent the bulk of his career with Santos, playing for the club between 1956 and 1974, and scoring 1,091 goals in 1,116 matches for them, according to the club’s website. FIFA reportedly disputes those numbers, however.

Family members led tributes and the Brazilian government announced three days of national mourning following news of Pele’s death aged 82.

President Jair Bolsonaro paid tribute on Twitter, saying: “He turned football into art and joy” according to a machine translation.

Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento posted a photo captioned, “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace,” according to a machine translation.

O Dia reported Pele died of complications resulting from colon cancer, which he had been receiving treatment for since 2021. He will be buried on Tuesday, January 3, at the Ecumenical Necropolis Memorial in Santos, according to the outlet. Credit: @nannysaantoos via Storyful
