Whether it's being a mercenary in a dystopian future world or traipsing around the world looking for ancient artifacts, love can strike our heroes and heroines in the strangest of places. And while it may seem out of place in an action game filled with zipping bullets or ravenous man-eating monsters, love...well, finds a way.
Some spoilers ahead, but we've done our best to obscure them.
Male V and Panam's love story has made even the most jaded gamers heart melt. From the innocent flirting and attraction between the two, to the budding romance, and the culmination of their love in a floating tank, their love story is one for the ages. And Panam isn't just a one-time fling for V either, as she's there for him in the most dire of situations.
Of course, the romance with Panam isn't the only option you have in the game, as there are three options to consider, whether you are straight, gay, or bisexual. But Panam is best girl for a reason.
Final Fantasy X
Time-crossed lovers Tidus and Yuna have long enthralled fans with their love story. Taking almost two games to resolve, their passionate saga is full of heartbreak, and how they made each other better.
It's a tale that still has fans thinking it's the best love story of the Final Fantasy series. If you've yet to experience Final Fantasy X yourself, the Nintendo Switch HD Remaster of FFX and FFX-II is the perfect opportunity to dive into the story.
Of course, with Final Fantasy VII Remake changing things up, we may see how the Aerith's love line with Zack or Cloud will play out. Maybe it's time for a new Final Fantasy power couple.
The Witcher 3
While Cyberpunk 2077 may be CD Projekt's latest, the Witcher series is really what put the Polish developer on the map. Based on the book series of the same name, it features the romance between the main hero, Geralt of Rivia and Yennefer of Vengerberg.
While you have an option to also romance Triss Merigold in the game, Geralt and Yennefer truly belong to each other. These two powerful beings really only want to lead normal lives and spend their lives together. Deep down, they really care about each other a lot and you'll come to realise this as you delve deeper into the world of the Witcher games.
If you've played through all the main Uncharted games, you'll know just how much of a fun couple Nathan and Elena are. Through ancient traps and death defying action sequences, the on-off relationship between the explorer and journalist can often leave you feeling frustrated for the couple at times. But with each game, our characters grow and change for the better, and Nathan and Elena finally find the reasons to be with each other for good -- and a daughter to boot.
In some ways, Uncharted isn't just an adventure game, it's a tale of growth, change, and love that spans across all kinds of ancient ruins (and console generations).
God of War
The God of War series have always been over-the-top action involving our hero Kratos viciously murdering gods who get in his way, so the 2018 instalment was a surprise to some. It told a more sombre tale of a father and a son making a journey to honour Faye, his dead wife. While we never get to meet Faye, we learn of her, and her love for her husband and child through their journey. It's heartbreaking, and at the same time, a beautiful tribute to her memory.
If you have yet to take a journey with Kratos and son, a new patch has just been released that lets you experience the game with buttery smooth visuals and gorgeous 4K resolution.
