Firefighters battle wildfires in southern France

Some 1,100 firefighters as well as water-bombing aircraft fought the blaze that has scorched more than 7,000 hectares of land and forced the evacuation of several thousand people from their homes and campsites.

Firefighters have so far been unable to contain the blaze and new fires broke out on several flanks on Wednesday (August 18).

Firefighters told Reuters on Thursday morning (August 19) that they were taking advantage of calm winds and lower temperatures to kill the remaining fires, as winds were expected to intensify later in the day.
