Firefighters battle to control wildfires near Athens

A fire in the region of Lavrio, some 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Athens, fanned by strong winds, spread quickly, forcing the evacuation of at least three villages. Fires reached the lawns and walls of some properties and burned through several hillsides.

Some 104 fire-fighters and 40 vehicles were taking part in the effort, along with 12 helicopters and planes.

Roads in the area were closed off and locals were also taking part with branches and garden hoses in dousing the blazes.
