Firefighter Plays Trumpet From Crane Over Hushed Rio Neighborhoods

Firefighters in Rio de Janeiro paid tribute to people for staying at home during the coronavirus pandemic, sharing video on Tuesday, April 2, showing a trumpeter in a firefighter’s uniform playing from a crane bucket over various neighborhoods.

“Our mission is to save lives! But we can also use art to cherish the soul of the population in this period of isolation,” the State of Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Brigade said in the video caption.

The footage shows the trumpeter playing from a height over the quietened areas of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Copacabana, Rocinha, Barra da Tijuca, Centro, and Urca.

As of Tuesday morning, Brazil had reported 7,022 cases of the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, and 252 people had died, according to data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Despite the rising cases and in spite of expert advice, President Jair Bolsonaro remains one of the few world leaders continuing to downplay the threat of the virus. Over the previous week, Bolsonaro pressed for Brazilians to get back to work and championed unproven treatments.

On Sunday, videos tweeted by the president showing him visiting markets in the Brasilia area, failing to follow social-distancing measures, and calling for a “return to normalcy” were removed by the platform, saying they violated their rules.

Twitter said it will remove tweets that “actively encouraging people to not socially distance.”
