Tow truck operator Brian Smith went door to door in Vacaville, California, early on August 19, to urge residents to evacuate from approaching fires and offer his help, local reports said.
Wildfires in Central and Northern California were sparked by lightning strikes, officials said.
The LNU Lightning Complex group of fires, burning in five counties including Sonoma and Napa counties, spread to encompass 131,000 acres and was at zero percent containment by Thursday morning, officials said.
Videos filmed and posted by Smith show him driving to residences and blowing his airhorn to try to wake residents as the flames grew closer. “Hey! Let’s go,” Smith shouts. “The fire is here.”
According to local reports, Smith decided to act when he heard on the radio that firefighters would not be able to reach certain areas in Solano County. Credit: Brian Smith via Storyful
