Fire Destroys Dozens of Shops at Market in Lagos

A fire at a textile market in Lagos, Nigeria, “gutted” dozens of shops on November 5, local media reported.

The blaze caught in the Balogun Market, on Lagos Island, forcing shop owners and customers to “quickly evacuate” the area, reports said.

Media outlet This Day quoted traders as saying that at least 100 shops were destroyed. This Day also reported looting by “hoodlums” after the fire broke out.

Reports said it took at least nine hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

Local media said no deaths were reported, but did not specify whether there were any injuries.

Nigeria’s Federal Fire Service said firefighters were responding to the blaze, but did not give further updates.
