Firefighters in Rome said early on October 3 that a 19th-century iron bridge had been declared unusable after a fire overnight.
The area under the bridge, known locally as the Iron Bridge, or the Bridge of Industry, was described as “completely burned” by the Corriera della Sera. The paper said the fire may have spread from a “squatter settlement” under the bridge, but this had yet to be confirmed. The paper cited witnesses describing seeing people running from the area as the fire broke out.
