Fined for breaching COVID-19 rules, Najib Razak posts photo of maskless Muhyiddin

After being fined for failing to take his temperature and checking in at a chicken rice restaurant as part of coronavirus safety measures, ex-prime minister Najib Razak is taking it out on Muhyiddin Yassin, it seems.

The 67-year-old disgraced prolific figure, who has been embroiled in corruption-linked legal cases, yesterday questioned whether high-ranking ministers would be treated the same under the law. In his online post, Najib even added a March photo of the current prime minister walking without his face mask on, a violation that carried a maximum fine of RM1,500 (US$360) on the first offense and RM10,000 for repeat offenders.

“Commoners, including myself, will be punished for flouting the law but what about if high-ranking ministers from the government do the same? I do not know,” Najib wrote on Facebook, hours after police released details of his penalties, adding that he will pay the RM3,000 fine.

He reportedly violated COVID-19 measures while at the Nasi Ayam Chee Meng restaurant in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur. Officers had confronted the Pekan MP at the eatery and checked his MySejahtera coronavirus tracking app to see whether he had recorded his location.

The owner, Yeok Wei Hao, was also fined RM10,000 (US$2,400) for failing to make sure that Najib followed coronavirus measures.

“After I admitted my wrongdoing, I was fined RM3,000 for breaching two COVID-19 rules, including not taking my temperature and not scanning the MySejahtera app,” Najib said in the same Facebook post, which contained a screenshot an Utusan Malaysia news report featuring a photo of Muhyiddin at Putrajaya’s Zenith Hotel lounge without a mask on.
