KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — Putrajaya will continue to raise the allocation for salaries of its one million over civil servants every year, Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said today as the government announced an increase in public service emoluments under Budget 2023.

Funding for next year’s civil service salaries and benefits will rise to some RM90 billion, Tengku Zafrul revealed today as he tabled the largest expansionary federal budget to date, up from RM86 billion under 2022’s federal spending plan.

The senator suggested it’s normal to expect the emolument allocation to be increased every year, although he didn’t explain why. Public service salaries and benefits often take up so much of the government’s yearly operating expenditure, prompting concerns about its sustainability.
