Rio Ferdinand says “something is happening behind the scenes” at Chelsea to make Thomas Tuchel “unhappy”.
The BT Sport pundit was referring to the Blues manager’s press conference after their 4-0 preseason defeat to Arenal, which one would have thought would go a long way to explain his unhappiness, after which Tuchel explained the problems with his squad.
But Doom-monger Ferdinand says there “must” be more to it than that to make Tuchel so “disgruntled and unhappy”, there just has to be.
Something secret, perhaps?
Asked if Chelsea will be ready for the new Premier League campaign after the game, Tuchel said: “I can not guarantee it. I saw today a team in Arsenal who are mentally committed to an idea of playing, a level of exhaustion, a level of physical commitment that we could not match.
“Also, a level of mental commitment that we lacked because we have a lot of players who are thinking about leaving and looking at their options. We have players that have left and I think at the moment that’s obvious.”
Tuchel went on to say: “We had an urgent appeal for quality players and a huge amount of quality players. We’ve got two quality players – that is no doubt – but we are not competitive like this and unfortunately, we could see it today.”
So he admitted his squad lacked commitment in that game and they need to add quality players – that’s the problem. So what on earth is Ferdinand on about…
“I don’t care about results in pre-season, it was more the aftermath,” Ferdinand told the Mirror. “The way the manager spoke in the press conference afterwards was the startling thing for me, it opened my eyes.
“There must be some things happening behind the scenes that we’re not aware of as yet, he seems disgruntled and unhappy.”
Why must there be? Tuchel has explained his reasons to be a bit peeved and they’re very good reasons.
“There are maybe some players angling for a move behind-the-scenes that we’re not aware of,” Ferdinand pondered.
Again, we know there are players that want to leave – Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech etc. It’s no secret.
“He’s brought Sterling in who will be a great addition, but if they lose the players that they’re talking about losing.
“Rudiger’s a massive loss, but Koulibaly’s come in – I think he’ll be a good signing this year. He’s experienced. But I think they need more again and I think he’s very aware of that and it’s not happening quick enough for them. If they don’t have any more movement in the window, I’d be worried about them.”
Yes, they “need more” signings. Tuchel is indeed “very aware”, as everyone is.
And again, yes, you would be right to be “worried” if they didn’t sign more players, but the thing is Rio, they very clearly are.
Marc Cucurella is pretty much done, they will sign another centre-back, maybe Wesley Fofana, they’re now making moves for Frenkie de Jong, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has emerged as a possible replacement for Romelu Lukaku.
Tuchel probably is a bit “unhappy”, mainly because of Barcelona one would have thought, but there doesn’t have to be something other than what we know about going on “behind the scenes”.
We don’t have to make everything into a soap opera.
