Rio Ferdinand has had his say on the top four race as Manchester United risk losing out on Champions League football to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have picked up their form at the right time and have now won their last six Premier League matches.

In contrast to this, Man United have lost back-to-back games and now risk throwing their spot in the top four away.

As things stand, Liverpool are just one point behind Man United, although Erik ten Hag’s side does have a game in hand.

Ferdinand expects Liverpool to be strong from this point onwards but expects his former side to hold on to their spot in fourth.

“The [Man Utd] players have to set the tone,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“They haven’t been good enough in recent weeks and they’ve not closed games out. They’ve got to change that right now.

“This Liverpool are hot on their heels and I don’t think Liverpool are gonna lose any of their games.

“I think Liverpool will win all of their last three games to put the pressure on but I think Man United will probably just do enough to get in the top four, I’d be very surprised if they don’t.”

Given Liverpool’s run of form, they will be expected to take maximum points from their remaining three matches which will leave them with 71 points.

That means that in order to guarantee a spot in the top four, Ten Hag’s side will need to take nine points from their remaining four matches.

Fellow pundit Peter Crouch backed up Ferdinand’s thoughts and expects Man United to get over the line.

“I do [think Liverpool will win all three games]. They’ve given themselves a great chance a few months ago you’d have said Liverpool were out of the race.

“They’ve put themselves back in the equation and that’s all they can do. I agree with Rio, I think Liverpool will win those games but United will do just enough. I see United just hanging on.”

Despite Liverpool’s fine run of form, Klopp himself is expecting Man United to get enough points to get them over the line.

“Other teams are above us and if they win their games we have no chance,” Klopp admitted.

“We have teams behind us, Brighton could win all of their games this season given how they played last night.

All we can do is take care of our own business. No one looks like losing more games than they’ll win.

“It’s about finishing the season as high as possible for us. It was that before but it wasn’t looking as bright. It could be fifth. Tottenham, Brighton and maybe Brentford are fighting for that.”
