Rio Ferdinand feels sorry for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho as he “could feel disgruntled” over not being selected to play for England.
Sancho moved to the Premier League last summer as he joined Man Utd from Borussia Dortmund for around £73m.
The winger was among the players who struggled last term as United ended up finishing sixth in the Premier League.
Sancho will no doubt have been delighted that he was afforded a fresh start at the start of this season with Erik ten Hag taking over as manager.
The Dutchman’s arrival has benefitted several players and Sancho is one of them.
The 22-year-old has scored three goals in eight appearances across all competitions at the start of the new season.
Despite this, Sancho was not included in Gareth Southgate’s squad for this month’s games in the UEFA Nations League.
Man Utd legend Paul Scholes suggested earlier this week that Sancho “deserves” to be included ahead of Man City star Jack Grealish:
“Gareth’s picked his players for a reason, possibly from previous squads,” Scholes said.
“I think he probably deserves to be in over Jack Grealish at the minute.
“He scored a good goal against Liverpool and showed signs tonight. He’s better when he’s coming inside and linking play.
“He doesn’t have that electrifying pace to go past someone on the outside or on the inside. When he was good at Dortmund, he had [Erling] Haaland, [Achraf] Hakimi – he always had someone to link with.
“At Manchester United, if he can link with Fernandes or Eriksen, who are clever players to link with, he could be a good player for Man United.”
Ferdinand also feels sorry for Sancho. He thinks that he “could probably feel disgruntled” that he has not been included.
The pundit also thinks it could be considered a “real surprise” that players have been included who are “not playing regular football”.
Harry Maguire, Kalvin Phillips, Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell have all been called up but Southgate has acknowledged that their situation “is not ideal”:
Ferdinand said: “There’s a lot of defenders. I think the only real surprise is probably the number of players he’s got that are not playing regular football at their clubs.
“Given the kind of stance that Gareth [Southgate] had when he got the job in terms of players playing minutes and picking players on form.
“Jadon Sancho will be one player who will probably look at that squad and think I’ve done what’s expected of me as a winger in terms of output, numbers-wise this season and I’m doing better in terms of numbers than other players, and I’m still not getting a look in.
“He could probably feel disgruntled.
“But I think that squad is a lot of what we would expect.”
