FedEx Drivers Help Chicago Residents Clean Up After Derecho Storm

Trees were uprooted and power was cut for large numbers of people after a destructive derecho storm that included at least one tornado blew through Chicago, Illinois, on August 10.

The National Weather Service urged residents to take cover as a dangerous line of storms that included winds of more than 70 mph hit the city.

Chicago electric utility ComEd reported over 635,000 customers being affected by the storm, which it said featured over 4,000 lightning strikes. Almost half of the customers had their power restored by Tuesday morning.

This video, recorded by Carly Targayren, captures the moment FedEx delivery workers and street residents worked together to clear a fallen tree from historic Logan Boulevard. She said the tree had been lying in the road for a few hours but was stuck on a lamppost, providing a challenge for neighbors working to move and dismantle the many fallen trees left after the storm passed on Monday afternoon. But with the drivers’ help, the tree was moved in less than 10 minutes and Logan Boulevard was cleared, according to Targayren. Credit: Carly Targayren via Storyful
