Fast-Acting Orlando Woman Rescues Choking Neighbor With Heimlich Maneuver

Florida resident Karen Aranda’s surveillance footage captured the moment she saved her neighbor’s life by performing the Heimlich maneuver on him after he showed up at the doorstep of her home in Orlando choking on a piece of steak on May 6.

In the video, Aranda’s neighbor Billy Bass can be seen at the doorstep of her home pointing at his throat to indicate he was choking. Aranda quickly realizes what is happening and performs the Heimlich maneuver on him.

The piece of meat stuck in his throat flew out on the first push, according to WFSB News.

Aranda told Storyful Bass was having dinner at his home when a piece of steak got caught in his throat. He tried to drink milk to wash the food down, but realized he could not breathe and ran across the street to her house in a moment of panic.

“When I heard the knock on the door, I knew by the sound that something was wrong. I opened the door and saw Billy’s face. I knew I had to react quickly because he was in trouble,” said Aranda. “He was pointing to his throat, his face had a purple, bluish color and his eyes were red and teary. I immediately turned him around, wrapped my arms around his waist, and just pressed as hard as I [could] and prayed that whatever I was doing would work.”

Aranda’s quick thinking paid off and she was able to save Bass from choking. She stated that Bass “is the best neighbor” and is always laughing and smiling. The two have known each other for over 15 years, according to Aranda. Credit: Karen Aranda via Storyful
