Fans leave Australian Open before lockdown

The Australian Open will continue without fans for the next five days as Victoria attempts to contain a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 at a hotel in Melbourne.

Fans leaving the John Cain Arena after Dominic Thiem's five-set victory over Nick Kyrgios said it was disappointing but necessary in order to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

At 23.30pm local time (1230GMT), play was suspended temporarily as fans were told to leave the Rod Laver Arena to comply with the lockdown..
