Fans Arrive at Melbourne Airport to Welcome Djokovic Despite Visa Cancelation

Australian border officials canceled the visa of the world’s top-ranked tennis player, Novak Djokovic, who was set to play in the Australian Open tournament despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19, officials said.

Djokovic failed to provide “appropriate evidence to meet entry requirements,” the Australian Border Force (ABF) said in a statement, adding that “non-citizens who do not hold a valid visa on entry or who have had their visa canceled will be detained and removed from Australia.”

According to reports, on Tuesday, Djokovic and Australian Open organizers said the 20-time Grand Slam winner had been granted a medical exemption and would travel to Australia for the tournament.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison reacted on Twitter, saying: “Rules are rules, especially when it comes to our borders. No one is above these rules. Our strong border policies have been critical to Australia having one of the lowest death rates in the world from COVID, we are continuing to be vigilant.”
