Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane lines up new streaming show Smokey and the Bandit
Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane is teaming up with some of the biggest names in comedy to develop a Smokey and the Bandit TV series.
The original 1977 comedy movie starred Burt Reynolds as Bo 'Bandit' Darville, a bootlegger tasked with transporting 400 bottles of beer from Texas to Georgia. However, he attracts the attention of the authorities after picking up hitchhiking runaway bride Carrie (Sally Field).
The new TV adaptation is to be co-written David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express) and his frequent collaborator Brian Sides. MacFarlane will executive produce the series alongside fellow comedy star Danny McBride. Director Jody Hill and producer Brandon James will also serve as EPs.
"Growing up in the South, Smokey and the Bandit was an iconic franchise for me. The legacy of these characters is a playground of swagger and sass that I'm excited to dig into," said Green (via The Hollywood Reporter).
According to THR, the new show is "inspired by the genre of '70s and '80s drive-in double features, with the potential series exploring the crossroads where humble realities meet those larger-than-life, all in a blast of tailpipe exhaust".
Smokey and the Bandit is the latest project to be added to MacFarlane's schedule for NBCUniversal, having signed a major deal with the company back in January.
Family Guy fans don't need to worry, however. Although his contract with Fox – where the adult animation airs – expired last year, he will continue to work on the show.
A network has not yet been attached for Smokey and the Bandit.
